Canada’s immigration minister has announced that the country has approved a new investor visa application from a group of Chinese nationals who want to settle in the country.

The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa issued a statement Tuesday, stating that it welcomed the decision to approve the visa application of Chinese and Hong Kong nationals.

“This is a positive development for the tourism industry in Canada,” the embassy said.

“The Chinese people and their economic and social impact have been well documented in Canada, and Canada’s efforts to improve the human rights situation in Hong Kong and China are a key part of that effort.”

The visa would allow Chinese nationals to visit Canada for up to two years without being required to undergo security screenings.

The statement added that Canada is also working to promote Chinese business in Canada through the Tourism Promotion Fund, which is designed to encourage Chinese investment.

A Chinese official told Reuters news agency the decision is part of a long-term initiative to improve relations between China and Canada, including through the implementation of an international law-based framework on the issue of immigration.

“The Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism, Andrew Lees, has been working with Canada’s stakeholders to build on the foundation of the Canada-China Free Trade Agreement, which was ratified by Canada in 2013,” the statement said.

Canada will host a three-day Chinese holiday in Ottawa next month to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the first Free Trade agreement between the two countries.

Canada has been the largest buyer of Chinese goods and services in Canada.

China has become Canada’s third-largest trading partner, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the Canadian exports to China.

Canada’s immigration department said it is working to make sure that Chinese citizens in Canada are not being discriminated against for their immigration status, and to help them settle in Canada safely.

“We will continue to support them in their efforts to settle safely and responsibly in Canada and will continue our work with their Canadian counterparts in the United States and overseas to ensure that we are able to continue to provide opportunities for them to continue their careers in the private sector,” it said.
